The Overview
Project Portfolio: Deep River, CT Middletown, CT Montville, CT
Product - DCE Solar Long Span B DC
Portfolio Size - 2.15388 MW
Module - First Solar Series 6
DCE Solar collaborated on three solar projects in Deep River, Middletown, and Montville, Connecticut, bringing a combined capacity of over 2.15 MW with the installation of the Long Span B DC system and First Solar Series 6 modules. The Long Span B DC system provided an optimal solution for these locations, utilizing otherwise undeveloped landfill spaces that are well-suited for renewable energy projects. By transforming these capped sites into productive solar installations, DCE supported both environmental benefits and land revitalization—an especially valuable contribution given Connecticut’s limited available land. For landfill applications, DCE’s precast ballast solution was ideal, avoiding the logistical complexity of pour-in-place methods. This approach allowed for seamless
The Challenge
Each project presented unique challenges, particularly as they were all located on capped landfills, requiring specialized approaches to ensure safe and efficient installation.
The Solution - DCE Solar’s Long Span B DC
Utilizing capped landfill sites for solar projects offers several advantages. These otherwise unused spaces, generally unsuitable for conventional development, provide an ideal setting for clean energy projects with minimal risk of development conflicts, as they are often located away from residential areas.
Repurposing landfills for solar energy not only brings environmental benefits but also supports land revitalization, especially valuable in Connecticut where land availability is limited. By transforming these sites, we’re able to create positive environmental impact while making efficient use of previously unproductive land. For landfill projects, DCE’s precast ballast solution proves significantly more favorable than a pour-in-place approach. On a capped landfill, the logistics of bringing in concrete trucks and executing remote pouring are complex and challenging. In contrast, using precast ballasts allows for easier placement and minimizes the disruption to the landfill cap, making it the more practical and efficient option for these types of projects.
Working with DCE on the construction of these three landfill projects was a great success. Their team was incredibly responsive, ensuring smooth communication at every stage. From timely delivery of materials to quickly addressing any technical questions, they made the entire process seamless and efficient. We look forward to collaborating on future projects!
